Password Protection:

Help us help you fight off hackers who want to use your phones for their calls and leave you with the bill!

 
All joking aside, your phone company will hold you responsible for all calls made through your phone service. We can't emphasize this enough - that's why we cover it in every user training session for our customers and why we have highlighted it in many FeatureTel Newsletters: Phone companies will hold you financially responsible for any calls made through your phone system and service. Every phone system is vulnerable to misuse by hackers. The weakest link is most commonly weak user passwords. Hackers will work to guess user passwords and then take over the account to funnel hundreds or thousands of minutes of calls, often to exotic, high-priced locations on behalf of their own callers.

 

What can you do to protect yourself and your company?

Almost every phone system has voicemail passwords and other passwords that give some protection for web-based user tools.  FeatureTel offers password protection on voicemail accounts and blocks DISA or direct inward station access by default. We also offer password protection on Web Portal accounts.
 
With any password-protected system, good password practices are the key. Have a policy to regularly change passwords and to use longer, more secure passwords. Don't use repeating digits, sequential numbers, or common keypad patterns from the keypad like 'Four Corners' (1379), 'Down the Middle' (2580), or 'the T' (123580).
  • Changing your voicemail password:
    • Press the 'messages' button on your phone
    • Choose option '3' to change your password by following the prompts
  • Changing your Web Portal password:
    • Log in to your Web Portal
    • Click on the 'Options' tab - then the 'Password' subtab
    • Follow the instructions to change the password

FeatureTel Spotlight:  DonorsChoose.org

 

Although they are not (yet) a client, we support DonorsChoose every month by giving an employee $250.00 to fund a local school project of their choice. We often highlight projects on our Facebook page and Twitter feed to attract attention to help get the local school projects funded. 

DonorsChoose.org is an online charity that makes it easy for anyone to help students in need.

Here's how it works: public school teachers from every corner of America post classroom project requests on DonorsChoose.org. Requests range from pencils for a poetry writing unit, to violins for a school recital, to microscope slides for a biology class.

Then, you can browse project requests and give any amount to the one that inspires you. Once a project reaches its funding goal, we deliver the materials to the school.

You'll get photos of your project taking place, a thank-you letter from the teacher, and a cost report showing how each dollar was spent. If you give over $100, you'll also receive hand-written thank-you letters from the students.

At DonorsChoose.org, you can give as little as $1 and get the same level of choice, transparency and feedback that is traditionally reserved for someone who gives millions. We call it citizen philanthropy.
