Protect your Equipment from Lightning Strikes
|
|
The best protection you can have is to unplug all electrical and signal connections to every piece of electronic equipment you have - but since that is not practical, there are some basic precautions you can take to protect your equipment.
- Ground all incoming circuits - Make sure that whatever circuit enters your building is properly grounded. With a good ground, there is somewhere for a surge to go besides into your electronic equipment.
- Protect both AC power circuits and signal circuits - Remember that much of your electronic equipment has two connections: one power and one signal such as a network, telephone, or coaxial cable and electric surges can travel along each one. Use a high-quality surge suppressor that includes both power outlets and signal circuit protection.
- Best Bet: Use power-conditioning battery backups - Power surges are not the only danger to equipment. Low-power conditions or 'Brown-Outs' can also cause damage to electronic equipment. Data storage devices such as hard drives need clean, consistent power in order to guard against corruption.
